These different shots create a concept for the video, so whilst it does not have a storyline, the shots break up the performance of the song. The music video is largely performance based and does not have a narrative, although there are shots of graveyards and moving shots in various modes of transport (car, plane). Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy is another good example of someone who follows these conventions.
A lot of performers wear make up and mess up their hair in order to look more aggressive, for example Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day is frequently seen wearing eyeliner and with his hair looking like it has not been styled. Performers usually dress quite smartly, they are often seen in suits. This dark tone is shown in music videos through dark or lack of lighting, and no bright colours are used.
Brendon Urie is a wonderfully eccentric musician and this album certainly did not disappoint. This song is from a similar genre (Pop punk) as the song we have chosen for our music video. Pop punk is seen as quite an aggressive genre, the music within this genre is usually loud and has a heavy drum beat, and often has quite a dark tone to the song, such as strong language within the lyrics, or the lyrics talk about dark topics such as death. My favourite songs from this album would have to be the title song, Death of a Bachelor and Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time, but all songs on the album demonstrate a fantastic evolution and show a whole range of emotion, from the forlorn sound of Death of a Bachelor, to the upbeat party vibes of Victorious, to the desire for power shown in Emperor’s New Clothes. I like to think this completion and plot twist for the storyline is about Panic! At The Disco rising from the ashes in a way and succeeding despite members’ departures. The music video follows on from the storyline shown in the band’s earlier song This Is Gospel. The video for Emperor’s New Clothes appeared on YouTube around Halloween last year, and was very appropriate for the season with it’s special effects and the transformation of Brendon into some kind of demon. The album was released in January, with some of the songs being available on YouTube since last October, however, I thought I’d post a review of it for you now.ĭespite the changes to the line up, the whole album still maintains P!ATD’s pop-punk upbeat style, all the songs are incredibly catchy with clever lyrics and very creative music videos to support them.
Death Of A Bachelor is P!ATD’s first album since dramatic line-up changes left Brendon Urie as the sole member.
